Why the basics? And why do them everyday?
Playing trumpet can be a real struggle if you don’t have a solid foundation. That foundation comes from having a firm grasp of the simplest aspects of trumpet. I believe that the sound is that foundational aspect. You need to have a clear mental image of the sound you want and only after you’ve developed that idea can you build on it.
So how do we develop that mental image? Well the first thing we can do is listen to great trumpet players. If you’ve never heard a great trumpet sound, how will you know what one is? Now, once we’ve heard that sound we have to figure out how to do that for ourselves and that brings me back to the basics. If you stat everyday with long tones or flow studies, you can use that time to evaluate and emulate that great sound. Use your long tones/flow studies practice to build your sound and/or emulate the sound of your favorite trumpet player. Because these exercises are simple, you can really focus your mind on the sound. And by doing this every day you will find that your sound, or your idea of a great sound will become stronger and easier to do. As a side effect, you might find that you are using your breath more efficiently. The cool thing is that when the sound is great and the breath is efficient, everything else becomes easier.
So give it a try! If you’re a beginner, ask your trumpet teachers or band directors who to listen to. If you’ve been playing for a while, then take some time and check-in your sound and see if maybe there’s something that you would like to improve about it and get listening!
